Just Announced – COLAs
The SSA has set the 2026 COLA at 2.8%. The increase takes effect with benefits paid in January 2026 (and for SSI: beginning December 31, 2025) for eligible recipients. For the “average retiree,” this 2.8% increase translates into roughly an additional $56 per month.
This is an excellent and timely strategic focus for the Virginia Federation of NARFE. Congressman Gerry Connolly first introduced H.R. 491, which Congressman James Walkinshaw has since taken over. This legislation will improve or protect COLAs (Cost-of-Living Adjustments) for federal and state retirees, aligning perfectly with NARFE and VFN’s mission. We need to keep it front and center as the 2026 COLA numbers are being discussed publicly.
