The Service Office is staffed with volunteers who can answer questions concerning:
-
Federal retirement;
-
Federal Employees Health Benefits Program;
-
Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance;
-
Social Security and Medicare;
-
How to contact the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) with changes in records, applications for benefits, or reporting the death of an annuitant; and
-
Proper actions to take in case of death of an annuitant as this can be a very complex process.
- We know this can be a difficult discussion, but sometimes we need to be practical and make sure our family knows what to do to handle Federal government rules correctly. When a federal Annuitant (someone receiving Federal payroll dollars) dies there are certain actions that must be taken. OPM must be notified. The funeral homes generally notify the Social Security Administration, but not OPM. The easiest and fastest way to notify OPM is online at https://rsreporting.opm.gov/AnnuitantDeath. Once this step is taken, OPM will notify you or your family by mail with the appropriate forms to be completed; including CSRS/FERS forms and the FEGLI form, if there was an active life insurance policy. OPM will also notify the appropriate health insurance company to change the coverage (e.g., self only). We recommend following up with your health insurance provider to make sure this is completed accurately. Be aware that if this is not timely completed, the Inspector Generals Office within OPM will send your family via a letter that this action must be complete immediately. Our NARFE chapter 0969 helps with the online reporting. One of our Service Office volunteers would be happy to help.
