NARFE Protects Federal Civil Service
NARFE, the National Active and Retired Federal Employees of the United States of America, leads the fight against illegal assaults on Civil Service protections. NARFE has a long tradition of defending the earned benefits of federal employees and annuitants, and now protects democracy itself. A lawsuit was filed today by NARFE and the Government Accountability Project “challenging the Trump Administration’s attempt to dismantle a cornerstone of American democracy: a federal civil service rooted in merit and integrity.” The lawsuit alleges that implementing Executive Order 14171 would make it easier to gut the civil service and replace them with partisans, a clear violation of the intent of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978. This act was the first civil service reform since the Pendleton Act of 1883, which “mandates that most positions within the federal government should be awarded on the basis of merit instead of political patronage.” NARFE, founded in 1921, continues to lead the fight in 2025.
