About Chapter 242 - Sarasota, FL

Chapter 242 was awarded its charter on 1/1/1953 by National Secretary K. J. Thompson after applying and submitting a Chapter roster with 46 members on 12/2/1952. It held its first formal meeting as an official Chapter on 1/5/1953.

NARFE was then NARCE, National Association of Retired Civil Employees.

Typical of the issues facing NARFE Chapters, two members had deceased and one moved in the short interval.

The first officers were:

President: John J. Royer

First Vice President: Oswin W. Menk

Second Vice President: Hubert M. Palmer

Treasurer: J. W. Myer

Secretary: Gertrude R. Joyce

Chapter 242 has a “child” and a “grandchild”. The members in the Englewood/Venice area found it difficult to come that far to a meeting, which led them to form Chapter 717. This was followed by members from the Lemon Bay area breaking off from Chapter 717 to form Chapter 2156.

Chapter 242 has contributed a President to the state organization, NARFE Florida, Inc., Wallace W. Roepke, a former scientist at the US Bureau of Mines, and a prolific inventor with 16 patents to his name. He had also served as a Chapter President, state Vice President and First Vice President. Mr. Roepke was also a published author on mine safety, with two books on Amazon. Sadly, Mr. Roepke passed away on August 16, 2011.
