NARFE Reaction to House FY18 Budget Proposal
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jessica Klement
July 17, 2017

Alexandria, VA – The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) is deeply concerned about the fiscal year 2018 budget proposal from the House Budget Committee. NARFE President Richard G. Thissen issued the following statement:

"At a time our elected representatives are moving forward with tax reform that would decrease income tax rates, this budget proposes a ‘retirement tax’ on hard-working public servants that would increase federal employees’ retirement contributions without any corresponding increase in benefits. This hypocrisy is an attack on the men and women who serve our country every day as federal employees and places an undue burden on those who have dedicated their careers to this nation. These public servants include nurses and doctors caring for our veterans, postal workers delivering our mail and federal agents thwarting terrorism and taking criminals off our streets.

"Specifically, the fiscal year 2018 budget resolution instructs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to find at least $32 billion in savings from mandatory spending under the Committee's jurisdiction. This would likely require a cut to existing retirement benefits, which is nothing more than a retirement tax on federal employees. These revenue increases would offset the cost of tax reform, a top legislative priority for congressional leadership and the current administration.

"Federal workers and retirees have dedicated their lives to serving the public good and their work should be honored. Any attempt to do away with or reduce their earned benefits is a tax on the work they’ve done for this nation. They’ve already contributed over $120 billion towards deficit reduction in the last several years. Isn’t that enough?

"The bottom line is this: Passing this budget resolution would be the first step in the process of adopting significant federal pay and retirement benefit cuts, and ties the fate of such cuts to political must-pass tax reform legislation, making it difficult to defeat in the future. NARFE strongly urges Budget Committee members to reject the budget resolution, as currently drafted."
