Join Allies, Fellow NARFE Members in Call to Action for WEP/GPO Repeal

NARFE continues to push support for the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 82, which could be scheduled for a floor vote as early as next week. Join us in our push to ensure House passage. You can contact your representative now, and/or join our day of action on September 19, along with other allied organizations.

Introduced on January 4, 2021, by Rep. Rodney Davis, R-IL, with the support of Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-VA, the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 82, would repeal the unfair Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which affect nearly 2 million and 724,000 beneficiaries, respectively. The bill has achieved 296 bipartisan cosponsors, surpassing the 290 required to trigger a possible House floor vote, and showing the strong base of support worthy of House action. If a bill has 290 cosponsors for 25 legislative days and the committee of jurisdiction has not acted on it, it can be placed on the House Consensus Calendar. The House must consider at least one bill per week through September 30 from that calendar, and H.R. 82 is on pace to receive a vote by then. But we must defend against rules changes or other efforts to delay or block consideration.

That’s why we’re making a final push for action this month, before House members return home to campaign in October. We’re working with allies in and out of Congress.

Spanberger, the lead Democratic supporter, has provided a webform for those affected by WEP or GPO to share their stories. Help her efforts to advocate for this on the House floor by sharing your story.

As a potential House vote begins to close in, please take some time to continue advocating for H.R. 82. On September 19, NARFE will conduct a coordinated day of action in which members are encouraged to submit letters to congress via NARFE’s legislative action center, as well as call their lawmakers using NARFE’s toll-free advocacy line: 1-800-456-8410, option 5. Please lend your voice to the fight.
