           Health coverage for spouse

QUESTION: I retired under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), and my wife is retiring from teaching in a few months. Can I add her to my Federal Employees Health Benefits Program plan at that time, or am I required to add her during Open Season?

ANSWERIf an eligible family member loses coverage under another group insurance plan – loss of coverage under a nonfederal health plan, for example – the retiree can change from Self Only to Self and Family or Self Plus One coverage from 31 days before through 60 days after loss of coverage. You would have to prove the loss of coverage for your wife under her nonfederal insurance to the Office of Personnel Management in order to change your enrollment to Self and Family or Self Plus One outside of Open Season. If you miss the enrollment change window, you also can make the change during any future Open Season, which begins every year in November.
