Step-by-Step Instructions for NARFE National Call Congress Day

February 14, 2012

Step 1: Call the Capitol using NARFE’s toll-free number, 866-220-0044.  Ask the operator to connect you to your representative's and/or senators' office. (The non-toll-free number is 202-225-3121).

Step 2: Tell the staff person who answers the telephone where you live, so they know you are a constituent; then say:

·       "I am a retired/active federal employee and member of NARFE."

When calling your Representative:

·       [Representative X] represents thousands of federal workers and retirees and their survivors. I urge you to oppose the federal employee retirement changes in the House highway funding bill, H.R. 7. These changes would increase employee contributions to retirement, reduce retirement annuities and eliminate the FERS annuity supplement for those who have been counting on it.

·       "Federal workers and retirees have already done their part, saving the federal government about $60 billion over 10 years through a two-year pay freeze. Further action to cut pay and earned health and retirement benefits to pay for H.R. 7, or a payroll tax holiday, or any other bill currently in Congress, is unfair, and I urge you to oppose it.”

When calling your Senator:

·       [Senator X] represents thousands of federal workers and retirees and their survivors.  I urge you to oppose changes in federal retirement and health benefits that unfairly single out federal employees and retirees.
