This Act repeals the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narfe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Issue-Brief_118th-WEP-and-GPO-Combined-December-2023-Update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO)<\/strong><\/a> from the Social Security Amendments of 1983.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>August 1, 2024:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Senate bill <strong>S. 597<\/strong><\/span><\/span> gained one more co-sponsor for a total of <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">62. This includes both Illinois senators. Senator Tammy Duckworth was one of the 23 original co-sponsors on March 1, 2023.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>September 19:<span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">Two more co-sponsors joined <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong>, for a total of 329. The required 218 representatives signed Discharge Petition #16. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">After the petition sat on the House calendar for seven legislative days, its filers, Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA) and Rep. Abigail Davis Spanberger (D-VA), requested a full House vote. <\/span><\/span>Note: A discharge petition forces a vote on the floor without the relevant House committee issuing a report on the bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">October 29:<\/span><\/strong> Another co-sponsor signed onto <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong>, for a count of 330.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">November 12:<\/span> <\/strong>As President Shackelford reported in a NARFE Newsline message \u2013 \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.narfe.org\/blog\/2024\/11\/12\/narfe-celebrates-historic-house-approval-of-h-r-82-eyes-senate-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We witnessed history tonight!<\/a><\/strong> We watched anxiously as the U.S. House of Representatives voted on the Social Security Fairness Act, <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong>, and, to our delight, saw a supermajority vote of 327-25 passage in favor to send it to the Senate, \u2026 In NARFE\u2019s entire history, we have not made it this far in our concerted effort to repeal the harmful\u201d WEP and GPO.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>November 19<\/strong>:<\/span> The Senate received <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> from the House.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">December 10:<\/span><\/strong> <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> was read in the Senate for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>December 11:<\/strong><\/span><br>\n\u2013 Several employee associations and labor unions, including NARFE national officers, held a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/federalnewsnetwork.com\/congress\/2024\/12\/at-labor-rally-schumer-commits-to-senate-vote-on-social-security-fairness-act\/slide\/5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rally<\/a><\/strong> near the U.S. Capital. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer committed to bringing <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> to a floor vote. Reps. Graves and Spanberger also spoke to the audience. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gT5uZYesXL8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>watch the rally<\/strong><\/a> on YouTube and hear remarks from Senator Schumer (5:34) and our National President (22:31), among others.<br>\n\u2013 <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> was read in the Senate the second time and placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders, Calendar No. 693.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>December 12:<\/strong><\/span> Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.narfe.org\/advocacy\/legislative-action-center\/?vvsrc=%2fcampaigns%2f116069%2frespond&amp;_zs=uJcfm&amp;_zl=JUb93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NARFE<\/strong><\/a>, \u201cSenator Schumer filed cloture on a motion to proceed to consider <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong>, the Social Security Fairness Act, setting up the first of a series of Senate floor votes necessary to pass the bill \u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>December 18<\/strong><\/span>: The Senate voted 73-27 to advance <strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> to a final vote. They must debate the bill and take a final vote, before they recess for the holidays.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>December 21<\/strong><\/span>: The U.S. Senate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>passed<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<strong>H.R. 82<\/strong> at 12:04 am by a vote of 76-20, the next to last step for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>repealing<\/strong><\/span> the WEP and GPO provisions of the Social Security Act.
