Coalition-building is an important advocacy tool used by organizations to advance their mutual goals. NARFE has founded two national coalitions and also has joined alliances where the member organizations share strategy and strengths on issues of concern. NARFE officers and activists can use the links provided below to access our coalition partners to find local units in their area.
The Federal-Postal Coalition
Founded in the 1970s by NARFE and federal and postal employee organizations as the Fund for Assuring an Independent Retirement, or FAIR, the coalition originally fought against Social Security coverage for federal employees. Over the years, FAIR changed its name to the Federal-Postal Coalition and now includes over 30 national organizations. A Grand Alliance
Made up of a broad coalition of over 100 national, state and local organizations, A Grand Alliance to Save Our Public Postal Service was created to protect and enhance the services of the United States Postal Service. www.agrandalliance.org
The Employee Thrift Advisory Council
The Employee Thrift Advisory Council (ETAC) is a select group of fifteen organizations offering counsel and advice to the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board (FRTIB), the body that administers the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Meeting several times throughout the year, ETAC worked with the Board to suggest and create additional options within the TSP such as the Roth 401 (k) and new options for surviving spouses and dependents.
The Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (LCAO)
NARFE is an active member of the LCAO, a coalition of 60 prominent national nonprofit organizations concerned with the well-being of America's older population. The LCAO works on issues common to all senior citizens, including Medicare, Social Security, long-term care and prescription drug costs. www.lcao.org
The Public Employees Roundtable
The Public Employees Roundtable (PER) was established in 1982 as a nonpartisan coalition of more than thirty Washington-based organizations striving to balance rhetoric that maligned and minimized the nation’s public servants. With its member organizations and congressional support, PER started Public Service Recognition Week in 1985 to highlight the work of public servants across the country and at all levels of government and continues to spearhead activities during PSRW today. PER is currently comprised of federal employee organizations and other good government groups from across the federal community. www.publicservicerecognitionweek.org
The Coalition to Assure Retirement Equity (CARE)
Founded by NARFE in 1991, CARE is comprised of more than 45 national, state and local organizations solely for the purpose of addressing the Social Security offsets--the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). Like federal annuitants, many state and local government retirees also are affected by the GPO and WEP. The Military Coalition
While no formal alliance currently exists between federal and military organizations, a long-standing tradition of cooperation and coordination continues to benefit both communities. Today, NARFE and the 33 members of the Military Coalition, including the MOAA, promote premium conversion legislation, work on long-term care insurance and support pay parity. www.themilitarycoalition.org
