A NARFE member for more than 25 years, Hensley has amassed extensive experience working at both the chapter and federation levels. In the McLean, Va., chapter, she served as newsletter editor and on the membership committee. In the Columbia, South Carolina chapter, she held positions on the legislative, nominating and bylaws committees and also served as first vice president (membership), second vice president (programs), parliamentarian, treasurer and a delegate to state federation and national conventions.
As president and second vice president of NARFE’s South Carolina Federation, she led efforts to update federation guidelines, review bylaws and plan several federation conventions. At the national level, Hensley has attended three legislative conferences, two national conventions and three federation president’s meetings. She was appointed to the NARFE National Bylaws Committee by outgoing National President Richard G. Thissen.
Her career with the federal government spanned 27 years at the Department of Defense (DOD) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which included positions in finance, program management, legislative reviews, strategic planning, grants administration and technology. Following that, she worked in various financial capacities for eight years with the South Carolina state government.
Hensley earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 1975 and a Certificate in Ocean Policy Studies from the University of Virginia. Additionally, she completed management, financial and technology coursework at DOD, the Department of Agriculture and Midlands Technical College.
