PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The federal community saw several legislative successes during the 116th Congress, and NARFE staff continue to advocate for our members on NARFE's ongoing legislative priorities. Please join us Thursday, August 6, at 1 p.m. ET, as we kick off our FEDcon20 webinar series with NARFE Staff Vice President of Policy and Programs Jessica Klement providing a legislative update and a rundown of what issues are on the table for the rest of 2020.

This webinar series is specifically designed to provide you access to the most sought-after topics of interest from FEDcon20. For NARFE members, the cost per webinar is $45. Or, pay just $99 for the full series of six webinars (this discounted offer is exclusive to our members). Please see the FEDcon20 Webinar Series webpage for more information on the topics covered and pricing.

Grassroots Advocacy Month Has Officially Begun!

Welcome to the first week of NARFE’s Grassroots Advocacy Month! This week, we are mobilizing members to focus their attention on repeal of the so-called “evil twins” – the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). Use the links included below to reach out to your lawmakers and ask for their support of this long overdue fix.

Visit the Town Hall Project website at www.townhallproject.com and enter your ZIP code to access a list of local congressional events, including town halls and more. Members who participate in local events and push NARFE issues in a public forum are extremely important to raising awareness and support.

If you are a NARFE advocate, including congressional district leaders, senatorial leaders, and legislative chairs, be sure to schedule meetings with your lawmakers to urge action on NARFE’s legislative priorities. The Grassroots Advocacy Month webpage contains all of the resources you need to successfully execute your meeting. If you have any questions, please contact advocacy@narfe.org

Here’s what you can do to help!

  • Write a letter to your lawmakers urging them to cosponsor the Social Security Fairness Act, H.R. 141 and S. 521, legislation to repeal the WEP and GPO. H.R. 141 has already garnered 249 cosponsors, and House rules guarantee a floor vote for bills with 290 cosponsors. We need to keep up the momentum to get the 41 cosponsors needed for a House vote.

  • Engage in NARFE’s WEP and GPO letter-to-the-editor campaign: Share with your community how the GPO or WEP affect you and your family personally by writing a letter to the editor. Read the provided instructions and customize your letter with facts and figures specific to your state. Our goal is to have as many published articles as possible between now and Labor Day.

  • Hop on FacebookTwitter and LinkedIn this week to share NARFE National President Ken Thomas’ video message addressing the vital role grassroots advocacy plays in NARFE’s advocacy approach. Don’t forget to hashtag your post with #GrassrootsAdvocacyMonth. Challenge fellow members to “like” the posts and share it within their social media networks. For members who aren’t Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn users, use this direct link to share the video via email or other means.
