PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As part of NARFE's efforts to increase awareness of the value of civil service, each year we join forces with the Partnership for Public Service to promote its annual Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals - or Sammies - awards program, which recognizes the best and brightest in the federal civil service. From public health to national security, environmental stewardship, international affairs, public administration and more, winners represent diverse focus areas and functions within the federal government. If you know of a deserving individual or agency, please send in your nominations by January 17.

ADVOCACY UPDATE

Tell Your Representative to Stop Shortchanging Retirees

Are you tired of the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) not keeping pace with the increased costs you’re experiencing? Visit NARFE’s Legislative Action Center today to send a message to your Representative urging him or her to support the Fair COLA for Seniors Act, H.R. 1553. The bill would replace the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) with the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) to ensure more accurate annual COLAs for seniors.

Currently, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses the CPI-W index to measure COLAs, but it does not accurately reflect the purchasing patterns of seniors who spend larger portions of their budgets on medicine, health care, shelter and other goods and services specific to their needs. Switching to the CPI-E would better account for seniors’ spending habits, resulting in more accurate COLAs.

The CPI-W shortchanges retired federal retirees, veterans and all seniors who depend on Social Security for much-needed retirement income. Millions of seniors living on fixed incomes rely on every dollar to see them through retirement, and the antiquated CPI-W cuts deeply into their earned retirement income and jeopardizes their long-term financial security.
