NARFE Disappointed Senate Appropriations Committee Failed to Explicitly Block Elimination of OPM, Provide Federal Pay Raise

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 19, 2019

In response to the Senate Appropriations Committee passing its fiscal year 2020 (FY20) Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill without a federal employee pay raise for 2020 and language explicitly blocking the Trump administration from eliminating the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), NARFE National President Ken Thomas issued the following statement:

“Much like the Senate Appropriations Committee today, I am practically speechless. The silence from Senate appropriators on a federal pay raise in 2020 withholds support for a market rate pay increase on par with the military and sends a message to federal employees that their work is not important. And, in failing to block the reorganization of OPM, they leave the door open for the president to implement parts of his proposed merger of OPM with the General Services Administration (GSA). With the administration already refusing to concede the necessity of prior congressional authorization for its plan, simply directing funds to OPM is not a sufficient safeguard. NARFE urges the full Senate to follow the lead of its House colleagues, provide federal workers with a 3.1 percent pay raise and explicitly block the elimination of OPM.”
