NARFE Dismayed by Government Shutdown, Inability of Congress and the President to Create a Path Forward

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (December 22, 2018) – In response to the partial government shutdown, National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association National President Ken Thomas issued the following statement:

“This year started out with a shutdown, and unfortunately, the year will end with another one. A shutdown is not a vacation for federal employees, but rather a stress-filled and uncertain period of time without the promise of a paycheck. Federal employees are hardworking professionals, not numbers or statistics, and it’s time for Congress and the president to stop treating them as political pawns in a game of chess where the American people end up losing. Congress and the president need to put aside their political differences, remember the roughly 800,000 federal employees affected by the shutdown and find a mutually agreeable path forward that will allow federal employees to do what they do best: serve the American people. Hopefully in the next few days, history will not repeat itself again.”
