NARFE Encouraged by Findings in Final Report of the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service

Alexandria, Va. – In response to the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service releasing its final report, “Inspired to Serve,” NARFE National President Ken Thomas issued the following statement:

“The Commission’s final report truly embodies what it is asking us as a nation to do: take bold action to cultivate a culture of service. We are encouraged to see the Commission agree with our testimony on the importance of benefits in the recruitment and retention of federal employees and its subsequent recommendation to improve communication about and data collection of benefits.

“Additionally, as NARFE works to combat the public’s negative perception of the federal workforce, we applaud the Commission’s recommendations to limit restrictions on and increase agencies’ communications aimed at raising public awareness of their missions and inspiring the next generation to serve.

“The federal government’s outdated classification systems and personnel procedures pose significant human capital challenges. However, we feel strongly that the Commission’s extensive research, along with commitment from both elected leaders and executives within the civil service, can help us overcome those challenges and instill a passion and desire in budding professionals and young people to serve the American people.”
