{"id":456,"date":"2025-05-27T16:22:33","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T20:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.narfe.org\/chapter2265\/?page_id=456"},"modified":"2025-08-29T06:07:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T10:07:44","slug":"speaker-bios","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.narfe.org\/chapter2265\/meetings-events\/meetings\/speaker-bios\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaker Bios"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Kathy Bass<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Account Manager at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia<\/p>\n<p>Kathy is a welcome guest at our Chapter and needs no introduction.\u00a0 \u00a0We can depend on Kathy to get the most relevant and best information each year.\u00a0 \u00a0In her role, she assists federal employees and retirees in understanding and managing their health insurance benefits in the Central Counties region of Virginia.\u00a0 Kathy is actively involved in outreach efforts, including briefing members on changes to medical plans and participating in virtual meetings and to ensure members stay informed about their health insurance options.<\/p>\n<h4>Mary DeCair<\/h4>\n<p>Ms. DeCair is a remarkable adventurer from Chesterfield County, VA, known for an inspiring and unique journey across the U.S.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"81\" data-end=\"159\">\n<p data-start=\"83\" data-end=\"159\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"37\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Unconventional cross-country trek<\/strong>: Instead of walking straight across the country, Mary set out in 2004 with a bold goal: to walk <strong data-start=\"131\" data-end=\"169\">100 miles in each of the 50 states<\/strong>\u2014a clever way to cover roughly 5,000 miles total<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"161\" data-end=\"239\">\n<p data-start=\"163\" data-end=\"239\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"28\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Over a decade-long quest<\/strong>: She pursued this at her own pace\u2014often alone\u2014logging miles on park trails and community paths, gathering mileage state by state. Supportive strangers frequently offered lodging and encouragement. Despite challenges such as injuries in Montana and a few overly curious dogs in Kansas, she persevered<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"241\" data-end=\"319\">\n<p data-start=\"243\" data-end=\"319\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"22\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Completion in 2015<\/strong>: Eleven years later, at age 74, she finished her endeavor when she completed her final miles in Idaho. She described the end as experiencing \u201cpost\u2011adventure depression\u201d\u2014a bittersweet mix of relief and longing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"321\" data-end=\"399\">\n<p data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"399\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\"><strong data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"37\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Turning her journey into a memoir<\/strong>: In 2023 she published <em data-start=\"61\" data-end=\"122\">The Next Step: Walk Across America: 50 States \u2013 5,000 Miles<\/em>, reflecting on her daily logs, meeting people, mindful approaches, and tips for anyone chasing a big dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why this journey stands out<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rather than a single long trekking route, Mary\u2019s innovative approach allowed flexibility and adaptation over time\u2014ideal for someone balancing ambition and real-world logistics.<\/li>\n<li>Her age-defying spirit proves you\u2019re never too old to start something extraordinary: beginning in her early 60s and completing in her 70s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Cynthia Graunke (Cindy)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Current Past President, 1st Vice President of Chapter 2265, and NARFE Area III Vice President<\/p>\n<p>A member of NARFE for 10 years.\u00a0 I am the Immediate Past President of Chapter 2265, Midlothian.\u00a0 My other positions were Service Officer, 1st Vice President, and 2nd Vice President.
