Fifty people assembled on November 13, 1980 at Bowie City Hall to form the Bowie-Crofton Chapter of NARFE. That meeting was organized by Ben Zitomer, a member of the College Park-Greenbelt Chapter who, along with others who lived in Bowie and Crofton, wanted to form their own chapter. Those 50 people signed on, and the quest for a charter for the new chapter proceeded.<\/p>\n
On April 28, 1980 they adopted a constitution and by-laws, which national NARFE approved on May 6. On October 31, they were granted their charter and \u201cempowered to do all things pertaining to the good of the organization\u201c.
\nSince the beginning, the chapter has steadily grown, and today our membership hovers around 400 current federal employees and retirees and their spouses. Our chapter includes members from the five communities listed in our charter \u2014 Bowie, Crofton, Mitchellville, Odenton, and Gambrills \u2014 as well as other surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
NARFE Membership is open to civilians who are or will be eligible to receive an annuity or survivor\u00a0 annuity from the Federal retirement programs of any agency of the United States government including:
\n\u2022\u00a0 Retirees
\n\u2022\u00a0 Current Federal employees
\n\u2022\u00a0 Spouses and surviving spouses of those eligible to join NARFE
\n\u2022\u00a0 Former Federal employees
\n\u2022\u00a0 A former spouse who is entitled to a survivor annuity<\/p>\n
To enroll in NARFE, please go to NARFE.org<\/span><\/span><\/a> and click\u00a0on\u00a0Join\u00a0Now\u00a0or call\u00a01-800-456-8410 and Press 1.\u00a0\u00a0You may enroll in both the NARFE national organization and a local chapter.\u00a0 New members who enroll in the NARFE national organization will receive a\u00a0free one year membership in a local chapter.\u00a0 The membership fee for a new member is $48.\u00a0 When you renew your membership in NARFE, you will be charged $48 plus an additional $10 fee if you\u00a0renew your membership in Chapter 1747.
