This retroactive payment will cover the increase in their benefit amount back to January 2024, the month when WEP and GPO no longer apply. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/retirement\/social-security-fairness-act.html?tl=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>R<\/strong><strong>ead the latest update under \u201cWhen will a person see their Social Security benefit increase because of the Social Security Fairness Act?\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The SSA also announced a new way to apply for retirement, spouse\u2019s, or surviving spouse\u2019s benefits if you did not previously apply because of the WEP and GPO. According to their website, the SSA \u201cwill take an application by telephone for people who did not previously apply for retirement benefits because of WEP or spouse\u2019s or surviving spouse\u2019s benefits because of GPO. If you meet these conditions, call <strong>1-800-772-1213<\/strong> Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 6 PM ET. <\/span>When the system asks, \u2018How can I help you today?\u2019 say \u2018Fairness Act.\u2019 Then, you\u2019ll be asked a few questions.
