In Remembrance of Charlie Dane

Charles W. (Charlie) Dane passed away on Monday, January 25th, 2016.    It’s hard to summarize all that Charlie meant to this Chapter and to NARFE as a whole.  Charlie was a member of NARFE for almost 20 years.  He rarely missed a chapter meeting or an executive board meeting.  He was our current chapter newsletter editor and before that he served as the Chapter President, 1st Vice President, Treasurer, Service Officer, and as a member of our Chapter’s audit committee.  He was a chapter delegate to the last 13 VFC Conventions.  He provided outstanding leadership over the years and was a reservoir of what is called “corporate knowledge”, and he was generous in sharing that knowledge with those who sought his advice or counsel.  He was truly dedicated to our efforts.  In fact, Charlie was known to work from his hospital bed if he was in charge of something that was needed.  Finally, Charlie was also a commendable role model of citizenship as a volunteer in his community.  For example, as a kidney transplant recipient, he was a longstanding member of Fairfax County’s Commission on Organ and Tissue Donations.  He was a member and past co-chair of the Fairfax County School Board’s Human Relations Advisory Committee.  He participated in a stakeholders’ assessment of top candidates when the search was on for a new Superintendent for the Fairfax County School Board.  He was his civic association’s representative to the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations.  The list really does go on.  As Louise Golobic our Alzheimer’s Chair said, Charlie was like the captain of a ship.  And that is true.  From my experience, you can replace a captain, but you don’t forget them over time.  Charlie will be missed.  When we have information about his funeral service and visitation, we will share it with you.
