OPM Releases Update on Cyber Breaches

June 27, 2016

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced two new developments in its response to the 2015 cybersecurity breaches that involved more than 4 million records containing federal personnel records and over 21 million background and security clearance records.

For those individuals whose background and security clearance records were compromised but who did not receive a notification letter because the letter was returned to the contractor for a better address, OPM said a duplicate letter will be sent to those individuals for whom OPM has been able to develop current addresses.

As required by the budget agreement past late last year, OPM also announced that, effective June 1, 2016, the Identity Theft Insurance protection has been increased automatically from up to $1million to $5 million.
