NARFE Legislative Hotline – March 14, 2014
Message from NARFE President Joseph A. Beaudoin

“By the time you read or listen to this week’s Hotline, members of the 113th Congress will have left Capitol Hill, and most will spend the week of Saint Patrick’s Day juggling constituent meetings, fundraising and family. I urge each NARFE member to be his or her own best advocate by seeking out your senators and representative while they are in the state. Cultivating relationships with your members of Congress is the best way to defend your earned benefits.”

Beaudoin Urges Action to Defend FECA Beneficiaries, Health Benefits
NARFE opposes Senate legislation, S. 1486, to overhaul the U.S. Postal Service because of changes to Federal Employees’ Compensation Act benefits that would affect all postal and federal employees who suffer from on-the-job injuries or illnesses. However, since the February 18 launch of an Action Alert on our Legislative Action Center, only about 2,000 NARFE activists have responded by sending a message to their senators. President Beaudoin asks each NARFE member to defend your benefits by using our Legislative Action Center to send a message to both your senators opposing S. 1486. Taking a moment to incorporate your own views in the letter will go further in strengthening our message.

Public Service Recognition Week is Around the Corner!
The first week in May has been designated Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) since 1985. It is a time to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees, ensuring that our government is the best in the world. PSRW is organized annually by the Public Employees Roundtable (PER) and its member organizations, including NARFE.

For NARFE members around the Washington, DC, area, the week kicks off with the second annual 5K run/walk to benefit the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA). More information on this event, including how to register, can be found here. Last year, NARFE members showed up in force to facilitate the race as volunteers. The success of the event rests squarely with these volunteers, who provide help with registration, safety, the water stop and clean-up during two shifts (7-9 a.m. and 9-11 a.m.). Please send an email to agensch@feea.org if you would like to help out on May 4. Every volunteer will receive a free event T-shirt!

Future Hotlines will feature additional ways you can celebrate PSRW.

Next Recess Begins on Saint Patrick’s Day
March 17 through 21 is a recess week for both the House and Senate. Not needing to be on Capitol Hill, your members of Congress are likely to be in their home districts and states this week. If you have not already secured an appointment, drop by your legislator’s office with the most recent copy of narfe magazine and ask for the district director’s business card. Follow up with a letter requesting a meeting with your legislator or his/her attendance at a chapter meeting or multi-chapter forum. NARFE’s legislative staff (leg@narfe.org or 703-838-7760) is eager to provide assistance if you need it. Face-to-face meetings and forums are a huge NARFE advantage only if employed. A list of upcoming public meetings can be found on the NARFE website at: http://www.narfe.org/legislation/. Choose “Townhall Meeting Schedules” on the left.
