QUESTION: Which states do not tax federal civil service annuities?
ANSWER: Every year in the April edition of NARFE magazine, we print the latest information regarding the tax treatment of federal annuities for each state. For the 2011 tax year, the following states exempted the total amount of civil service annuities: Alabama, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
